Three people in Cianyi Gitiburi location in Mbeere North, Embu County lost their lives after they reportedly consumed illicit brew.
In the incident that claimed the lives of the three, two are reported to have died in the evening of Saturday, September 24, 2022, while one died later in the night.
The area residents decried that the consumption of the killer brew was rampant in the region because the local administration had let its guard down and failed to enforce stringent measures against the brewers of the killer drinks.
Joseph Njeru, a resident claimed that some senior police officers from Siakago police station were colluding with illicit brewers to do the business.
“You can’t fight illicit brew when you are still in the business of liquor. Some officers here are working with those selling fake liquor, and we have been complaining about this for long,” he said.
He urged the administration to wake up and fight against the brewers selling the brews to the locals.
Mbeere North Member of Parliament (MP) Geoffrey Kiringa while acknowledging that the recent deaths were a big blow to the community urged police to respond swiftly and arrest the culprits.
“We cannot continue watching our people die in this manner, we will stage a demonstration to push for the transfer of these officers in Siakago, it is possible they can work elsewhere for the safety of our people,”Kiringa said when he visited the area.
He asserted that he was informed that a senior officer had two liquor joints within the area making it difficult to fight against the menace.
“Why are some senior officers here in Siakago allowed to do liquor business here and sell unworthy alcohol to our people? “the legislator posed.
Kiringa further cautioned the residents against consuming alcohol without background information on where it was processed. He also called on the county government to deal with liquor vendors who are operating without licenses.
“Let us be cautious as locals with what we are consuming,” the legislator warned.
Mbeere North Deputy County Commissioner Ann Mitema assured residents that police had launched investigations to ascertain the actual situation of the matter.
“Postmortem will be done to know the truth,” she said.
