Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has announced an annual Nairobi Festival to appreciate the city’s diverse food, culture and art.
Speaking at a meeting with a delegation from the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Thursday, September 22, the county boss said the event will be held after the December 12 Jamhuri Day celebrations.

Nairobi Festival to celebrate ‘vibe of the city’
The festival, Sakaja said, will offer an opportunity for the residents to celebrate the “vibe of the city.”
The event will feature exhibitions on food and art in designated streets, sports tournaments as well as awards for the best-pimped matatus popularly known as ‘Nganyas’.
“In December, we will set aside some streets to display culture, food, creativity, have the nganya awards for the best-done matatus, have rugby, football and basketball tournaments and many other activities,” he said.
Sakaja to abolish ‘archaic laws’
The former city senator also affirmed his commitment to abolish ‘archaic by-laws’ that hinder creativity and innovation in the capital.
Sakaja for instance said the ban on street photography was illogical.
“When we say we want to be pro-business it is not just passive to stop harassment of traders but we want to be proactive to facilitate and promote. There are many archaic laws including those that hamper creativity and innovation and we are going to weed those out,” he said.
“Businesspeople should spend more time doing business and not chasing compliance issues,” he added.
