A suspected thug was on Thursday, September 15, gunned down in a fierce gun battle with undercover offices in Nairobi’s Kayole area.
Police said the deceased was among a five-man gang terrorising locals at Duka Moja in Soweto.
Officers got a tip-off from members of the public that the gang was robbing people in the area and responded swiftly.
Thugs cornered
The thugs spotted the cops and attempted to escape towards Ngong River.
The suspects, police said, were challenged to surrender but defied the orders and fired at the officers instead.
“The Soweto undercover team got reports from the public that there was a gang that was robbing the public along Duka Moja area. They spotted a group of five who fled towards the Ngong river and split into groups of two. They were challenged to surrender but they defied and started firing at the officers,” a police report reads in part.
The officers responded and shot one of the suspects who jumped into the river and drowned while the other suspects escaped into a nearby thicket.
Upon search, the officers recovered a carrier bag which was containing three mobile phones, a laptop, several rounds of ammunition, bhang and Ksh50.
The men in uniform also conducted an extensive search in the river to recover the firearm but they did not find it.
The body of the deceased was retrieved from the river and transferred to City Mortuary awaiting autopsy and identification.
Meanwhile, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) are pursuing the other four suspects who are still at large.
