Seven people were killed after bandits staged an attack in Napeitom village in Turkana County on Sunday night July 31, 2022.

Turkana  East Sub-county commander Solomon Kosgey said the victims include five children and two adults.

The police boss said the attackers raided the village in the dead of the night before going on a killing spree.

They are said to have torched 101 houses during the attack.

Two other people sustained burn injuries and are receiving treatment at Lokori Sub-county Hospital.

Security teams have been dispatched to the area and are currently pursuing the assailants. Police believe the arsonists escaped through Suguta Valley.

Nanok condemns bandit attacks

In May, Turkana Governor Josphat Nanok blamed the rising cases of banditry attacks in the county on politics. He accused politicians of fueling the attacks to gain political mileage.

The county boss made the remarks following attacks targeting Public Service Vehicles along the Lodwar-Kitale highway and raids on Kainuk, Loyapat and Lowoi Akwara in Nakwamoru.

“I believe that it is not a coincidence that the frequency of the attacks appears to increase as we approach the general elections.

“Insecurity has been used to suppress the participation of the electorate in elections and as a campaign tool for politicians to mobilise for support by inciting emotions of residents,” Nanok said in a statement.

Nanok also accused the Ministry of Interior and Coordination through the national government administration officers of laxity in protecting the residents.
