Comedian Eric Omondi was arrested outside the Parliament Building on Friday, June 21, 2024, when he tried to stage demonstrations over the contentious Finance Bill 2024.
In a video seen by K24 Digital, Eric was riding on a horse and dressed in a red outfit alongside other individuals.
Omondi and the few other protesters chanted “Power to the people” and other anti-Finance Bill 2024 slogans as they made their way to Bunge Towers. Upon his arrival, officers manning the area pounced on him and roughed him up before detaining him as the other demonstrators ran away.
“Kama ndugu yangu aliuliwa mje mniuwe,” he said before being caught by the officers at the scene.
Protests over the contentious bill heated up across Nairobi, Mombasa, Isiolo, Eldoret, and Nakuru counties among others over the bill.
A high percentage of youths in the country turned up in numbers to ask Members of Parliament (MPs) to reject the bill in totality.
Despite the protests, the majority of MPs okayed the bill for Second Reading.
Earlier, Activist Boniface Mwangi issued a seven-day demonstration schedule after a youthful protester, Rex Masai, was shot dead during Nairobi protests on Thursday, June 20, 2024.
Mwangi also accused the MPs of allowing President William Ruto to do wrong by passing the bill to the committee stage despite it being objected to by a significant number of Kenyans.
“Despite our collective cry rejecting Finance Bill 2024, Parliament gave Zakayo the right to do wrong to 54 million Kenyans.
“We reject the Finance Bill in its entirety. And despite our peaceful protests, police have responded with bullets, killing two of our own, maiming many others and one person is in critical condition. We refuse to be silenced, so we’re marching on,” the activist said in his statement.
