Activist Boniface Mwangi has issued a seven-day demonstration schedule after Rex Masai, a youthful protester, was shot dead by a police officer in the streets of Nairobi on Thursday, June 20, 2024.
Mwangi in a statement through his official social media accounts on Friday, June 21, 2024, said despite holding peaceful protests, police had responded with bullets, killing two of the protesters.
Betrayal
The vocal activist-cum politician also accused the Members of Parliament of giving President William Ruto the right to do wrong after they passed the Finance Bill 2024 to the committee stage, despite the objection it faced.
“Despite our collective cry rejecting Finance Bill 2024, Parliament gave Zakayo the right to do wrong to 54 million Kenyans.
“We reject the Finance Bill in its entirety. And despite our peaceful protests, police have responded with bullets, killing two of our own, maiming many others and one person is in critical condition. We refuse to be silenced, so we’re marching on,” Mwangi said in his statement.
Demonstration schedule
He issued a 7-day demonstration schedule that kicks off today (Friday, June 21, 2024), all the way to Thursday, June 27, 2024.
On the first day of the demonstration schedule, Mwangi said the youth supporting the Anti-Finance Bill 2024 protests were supposed to gather at the City Mortuary, where the body of the slain protester Rex is lying.
From the City Mortuary, they would attend Juma prayers at Jamia Mosque in Nairobi, after which they would give water to those leaving after the prayers.
The second day, Saturday, June 22, 2024, will see the Gen Z gather at night clubs where they normally frequent, to have all the bars and clubs stop the music to listen to Anti-Finance Bill 2024 chants.
“Day 1. Friday, 21st June: After City Mortuary, attend Juma prayers at Jamia Mosque, and give water to those leaving after the prayers. Day 2. Saturday 22nd June: At midnight, all bars and clubs where Gen Z frequent will stop the music to listen to a national crescendo of: Ruto must go, and Reject Finance Bill,” Mwangi said.
The 3rd day of the schedule which will be on Sunday, June 23, 2024, will see the Gen Z protesters stop parliamentarians who voted in favour of the bill, from speaking in churches.
On Monday, June 24, 2024, the protesters will storm the constituency offices of the lawmakers who voted in favour of the Bill, to tell them off for betraying Kenyans and kicking off the process of boycotting their businesses and collection of signatures for their recall.
“Day 3. Sunday 23rd June: Deplatform politicians in church. Don’t allow any politician who voted YES to speak in your church.
“Day 4. Monday 24th June: Make a courtesy call on MPs who voted ‘Yes’ at the constituency office. Tell them: Endelea hivyo hivyo! Boycott the businesses of these traitors. Ostracise them for betraying 54 million Kenyans. Start collecting signatures to recall them,” Boniface Mwangi stated.
The protesters will then lead a nationwide strike on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, which Mwangi says will lead to a total shutdown of the country. They are also supposed to occupy parliament on this day.
They will then visit the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) and Inspector General of Police offices on Wednesday, June 26, 2024, to demand for justice for Rex.
They are also planning to block main roads leading to Nairobi on Thursday, June 27, 2024, and lead an ‘Occupy State House’ protest, to witness President William Ruto sign the Finance Bill 2024 into law.
