Gen Z, new face of demos

On Thursday, June 20, protesters gathered along Kenyatta Avenue chanting and with Occupy Parliament placards.

Young Kenyans, thought to be part of Generation Z (Gen Z) engaged police in running battles to make their way to Parliament buildings.

With water, masks and a show of solidarity, Gen Zs turned out in large numbers in Nairobi Central Business District to protest against the Finance Bill 2024. They sang songs and carried placards emblazoned with the words “Reject the Finance Bill”.

On the other hand, anti-riot police were seen lobbying teargas canisters even as the protesters chanted “We are peaceful”

Additionally, a number of medical personnel were also seen in the city to provide aid to injured protesters. The protests began in Nairobi on Tuesday and spread to Mombasa on Wednesday. As of Thursday, they had spread to Nakuru, Kisumu, Eldoret and Nanyuki among other towns.

In response to the proposed ‘punitive’ tax measures in the Finance Bill 2024, young Kenyans orchestrated the Occupy Parliament protests.

In the days leading up to the first protests done on Tuesday, youths took to social media with the hashtag #OccupyParliament to encourage Kenyans not to miss the demonstrations.
