Elsa Majimbo will steer clear of Kenya’s political issues including the contentious Finance Bill 2024, currently in Parliament and set for the vote on Thursday, June 20, 2024.
In a statement on X, the Los Angeles-based comedienne said following her previous salty interactions with Kenyans on X, she will opt out of giving her opinions on issues concerning the country.
“Last time I spoke about Kenyan issues I was told to shut up and go play dress up. That’s exactly what I’m doing this round,” Majimbo wrote on her X account, adding, “Whatever I do y’all will bully me so I’m just going to continue with life. I choose mental health.”
Responding to a user who urged the Forbes 30 under 30 humorist to use her platform to speak up on important matters, Majimbo recalled an earlier tiff that saw her trolled by Kenyans.
“Usually, I wouldn’t care and get involved regardless but I’m going through a lot and can’t add another bullying extravaganza to my plate,” Majimbo stated.
Majimbo’s trolls
In 2023, Majimbo was trolled after posting a joke on her socials that her new-found wealth had changed her.
“I’ve seen a lot of comments on how money has changed me so much, and my response is, of course, it has. Are you joking? I was never humble. I was a victim of my circumstances. Do you know the difference? What happened to the old Elsa? She got her money up! My net worth went through the roof. That’s what happened to the old Elsa. I’m rich now!” Majimbo posted.
However, online trolls would take the issue seriously to the extent of using unprintables to hint that no amount of money could make her lighter.
“Not some of y’all saying money can’t wash my dark skin I rebuke you,” Majimbo retorted the trolls.
Finance Bill 2024
The Tuesday, June 18, 2024, protests saw a huge turn up of the youth, who for a long time were regarded as indifferent to political issues.
According to activist and Co-founder of Mathare Social Justice Centre, Wanjiru Wanjira, the Tuesday protests attracted large numbers of youth- millennials and Gen Zs without the mobilisation of politicians.
Some of the contentious issues in the bill were the eco levy to affect sanitary towels and diapers, the proposed increase of mobile transaction fees and the motor vehicle circulation tax that would have seen a spike in transportation costs in the country.
