Kenyan entertainer Cassy Pool has taken a jab at Gen Z protesters who turned up for the demonstrations on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, opposing the Finance Bill 2024.

In an interview with YouTuber Trudy, the actor, who appears to support the contentious bill, did not hold back in expressing his views on the matter.

Where is the problem nikisupport Finance Bill? Tusikue watu ambao hatujui, nyinyi magen Z ambao mnakimbia pale na lungs zenu ni virgin mnapigwa teargas moja mnataka kufaint,” Pool remarked.

He questioned the understanding of the young protesters, accusing them of lacking knowledge about the bill they were protesting against.

Na niulize kelele mmepiga, mnajua iyo Finance Bill, mmeisoma, hamuijui. Wengi wamekuja kutafuta madem pale. Wengi wanafanya exercise, wengine wako therapy,” he added.

Pool emphasized the need for more constructive and informed discussions about the bill.

“We must raise a generation that’s in order. We have been doing this over and over again. Wenye wamekua kwa streets before wameona it’s not working, we must hold sober conversations,” he asserted.

In addition to criticizing the younger protesters, Pool also took a swipe at fellow celebrities who participated in the protests.

He suggested that some of the celebrities were using the protests as a platform to revive their dying careers.

“Celebs walikua uko ni wale wameishiwa, walikuwa wasanii wa kitambo, walienda maandamano kurudisha usanii wao kupitia protests,” he commented.

Gen Zs take over bill protests

The well-curated Tuesday protests saw young adults taking to the streets after days of rallying support on the internet with the slogan ‘Occupy Parliament’ and hashtag #RejectFinanceBill.

MPs were treated to a showdown at Parliament Road before the tabling of the controversial bill. The young men and women, celebrities, and activists showed up and off to rise against over-taxation.

As planned, protesters assembled in large numbers, chanting “Ruto must go” as MPs convened for the Parliamentary session.

These demonstrators crowded Parliament Road, expressing their frustration over the Finance Bill 2024, which proposed new taxes on already burdened taxpayers.

However, some protesters were quickly apprehended by police officers on standby and taken to the station, while others dispersed and encountered teargas.

Nairobi’s regional police commander, Adamson Bungei, declared all city protests illegal, despite organizers’ claims of having notified the authorities and being prepared for the demonstration.

Bungei stated that no official permit applications for assembly or picketing had been received, rendering the planned protest unlawful.

“The notice submitted to Central is dated June 17, 2023, and it is inaccurate. We cannot approve it. No demonstrations will be allowed. Kenyans should be free to go about their business, and those with grievances should address them through the appropriate channels,” he said.
