Akorino content creator and businesswoman Carey Priscilla was among the Kenyan celebrities who showed up for the Occupy Parliament demos in Nairobi CBD to protest against the controversial Finance Bill 2024.

As seen on her Instagram post on June 18, 2024, Priscilla, who is heavily pregnant with her third child, confirmed that she attended the protest and was seen posing with placards during the demonstrations.

Carey vs Fan

A few netizens voiced discomfort about Carey attending the protest considering she was heavily pregnant. One fan @chesongol_joshua suggested Carey should focus on delivering before attending the protests.

In a quick rejoinder, Carey boldly defended her move adding that she had chosen to start her fight as early so that her kids have a better future.

“Why wait until they are born when I can start fighting for their future betterment now?” Carey said.

During the protests, Priscilla carried several placards voicing different messages. One read, “Overtaxation = Finance Bill 2024, and had the list of items like taxes on bread, vehicle tax, tax on Mpesa and tax on cancer treatment among others.

In another photo, the Akorino businesslady held another placard and stated, “Sasa tusinyeshe? #ENDPERIODPOVERTY.”

Additionally, Carey expressed her strong opposition to the bill adding that it was already too much for vulnerable Kenyans.

“Earlier Today…Tax policies should never heavily burden ordinary citizens, especially those in vulnerable communities already struggling with inflation and low wages!”

Occupy parliament protests

On June 18, 2024, Kenyans demonstrated against the proposed tax laws using the hashtags #RejectFinanceBill2024 and #OccupyParliament.

Several celebrities also took part in the protests, including Jackie Matubia who posted a video on her Instagram channel showing herself crying after receiving tear gas.

“Mimi nimzalendo leo nimekula teargas…I did it for everyone who couldn’t do it. May our voices as the youth of this country be heard… #rejectthefinancebill,” Matubia wrote.

Further, Matubia criticized the bill asking whether women should not menstruate given that a tax will be imposed on sanitary towels.

“Imagine imposing tax on cancer treatment!!! On pads, sasa tusinyeshe?” Jackie stated.
