Judicial officers and advocates staged a peaceful procession in the streets of Embu town under tight security to express their outrage and sorrow following the brutal killing of Principal Magistrate Monica Kivuti of the Makadara Law Courts.
The Wednesday, June 18, 2024, procession which was led by Judge Antony Kaniaru of the Lands Court, condemned the act as a tragic blow to the judiciary.
Judge Kaniaru described the late Magistrate Kivuti as a promising young legal mind whose life was cut short under harrowing circumstances.
“Monica was a young soul who should not have died in such a manner,” Kaniaru lamented, calling the murder a stark wake-up call for the security apparatus to enhance protection measures for judicial officers.
The judge emphasized the need for immediate and effective action to prevent further loss of life within the judiciary.
“The security of judicial officers should be taken with utmost seriousness,” Kaniaru stressed.
His call for increased security measures was met with resounding support from the assembled crowd, reflecting widespread concern within the legal community.
Joining the procession, Law Society of Kenya (LSK) Chairman Embu chapter Rose Migwi echoed Judge Kaniaru’s sentiments, condemning the murder. She said it was an unfortunate incident that has left the judiciary in a puzzle.
“This is an act that should be condemned by everybody, the life of the judiciary officers matter,” he declared.
The protest, which wound through the main streets of Embu town, saw participants carrying placards that decried the violence against judicial officers.
Magistrate Kivuti’s murder has sent shockwaves through the judiciary and sparked a broader conversation about the safety of those who serve in the legal system in courts.
Calls for systemic change reverberated throughout the protest, with several speakers urging the government to implement robust security protocols for judicial officers.
“We demand protection. Monica was killed by a person who should protect her; it’s a bad thing,” Migwi stated emphatically.
