The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has postponed the interviews for the position of Judge of the Court of Appeal scheduled for June 18 to 21, 2024, following the death of Makadara magistrate Monica Kivuti.

In a statement on Sunday, June 16, 2024, JSC secretary Winfridah Mokaya said the postponement was to mourn and honour the life and service of the magistrate.

“It is with profound sadness that the Commission and the entire judicial service mourns the death of Hon. Monica Kivuti who was serving as a Principal Magistrate at the Makadara Law courts. Hon. Kivuti was a valued member of the Judiciary team, known for her unwavering commitment in upholding the rule of law and profound professionalism and dedication to ensuring justice for all,” Mokaya stated.

“The JSC extends deepest condolences to Hon. Kivuti’s family, friends and all those who had the privilege of working with her. In solidarity with the Judiciary to mourn and honour the life and service of Hon. Kivuti, the Commission has postponed the interviews for the position of Judge of the Court of Appeal scheduled for 18th — 21st June 2024.”

Mokaya promised that the commission would publish a revised interview schedule in due course.

Kivuti’s death

Kivuti succumbed to her injuries while receiving treatment at the Nairobi Hospital, where she had been transferred for specialized care after the attack and her body has been moved to Lee Funeral Home.

Chief Justice Martha Koome has already declared Tuesday, June 18, 2024, a day to mourn Kivuti, stating that no court will sit on this day as the entire Judiciary will come together in solidarity with Kivuti’s family, friends and colleagues.

Additionally, Koome noted that presiding Judges and Heads of Stations will lead remembrance meetings in common rooms in all court stations from 10 am on Tuesday, June 18, 2024.

“Presiding Judges and Heads of Stations will lead remembrance meetings in common rooms in all court stations across the country on Tuesday 18th June 2024 at 10 am to allow Judges, Judicial Officers and Staff to commemorate the life of Hon Kivuti and to commiserate with the family and one another. Courts in Nairobi will convene at Makadara and Milimani Law Courts,” the CJ said.

Makadara Law Courts remain closed until Monday, June 24, 2024, to allow the dismantling of the makeshift court structures and reorganization for security reasons.
