Police say they have informed Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officers from Umande and are also following up to establish and track the animal that might have been involved.

Another lion attack

This comes days after a police officer sustained injuries following a lion attack near the Lolomarik Operations Camp in Buuri West Sub County on June 3, 2024.

The incident occurred at approximately 12:15 am, as reported by Inspector David Kariuki through OB Number 04/03/06/24.

According to the report, Police Constable Saiid Kassim Maalim was attacked by a lion while making a phone call about 20 meters from the camp.

Police Constable Maalim was alerted to the imminent danger by his colleagues, who noticed the lion charging towards him. The swift actions and loud noises from the other officers successfully distracted the lion, allowing Maalim to escape.

Despite the quick response, the officer sustained injuries beneath his left shoulder, on his right thigh, and on his left knee.

“While he was making a phone call at about 20 metres from the camp, he was alerted by his colleagues of a lion charging towards him. The lion was distracted by the noises from fellow officers and the officer managed to escape with injuries beneath the left shoulder, on the right thigh and on the left knee,” the police report read in part.

Maalim was immediately rushed to Nanyuki Huruma Mission Hospital, where he was later referred to Life Care Hospital in Meru for specialised medical attention.
