As the Kenya Air Force marks its 60th anniversary, its commander, Major General Fatumah Ahmed, has paid tribute to the bravery and dedication of its personnel, past and present.
In a statement issued by KDF on May 8, 2024, Ahmed congratulated the men and women of the Kenya Air Force for their unwavering commitment to excellence and their pivotal role in shaping the safety and stability of the country.
“Today, we celebrate a momentous occasion in the history of the Kenya Air Force,” Ahmed said.
“For six decades, we have stood as a pillar of strength and security for our nation. Our journey has been defined by unwavering commitment, professionalism, and relentless pursuit of excellence.”
The Kenya Air Force was established in 1964, shortly after Kenya gained independence from British colonial rule.
Since then, it has played a crucial role in safeguarding the country’s airspace, supporting civil authorities, and participating in peacekeeping missions and humanitarian efforts.
Ahmed acknowledged the sacrifices made by those who have served in the force, saying: “Their vision, courage, and sacrifice have been the driving force behind our growth and success.
“We also celebrate the remarkable achievements and milestones reached by our current personnel, whose dedication and skill continue to propel us forward.”
The commander also expressed her gratitude to all members of the Kenya Air Force family, saying: “Your hard work, loyalty, and sacrifices are the cornerstone of our success. Your service has not only protected our nation but has also inspired a sense of pride and unity among Kenyans.”
Looking ahead, Ahmed urged the Kenya Air Force to continue upholding its values of integrity, discipline, and dedication.
“Together, we will soar to greater heights, honoring the legacy of our past and building a future of excellence,” she said.
First woman commander
Fatumah Ahmed was appointed the first female commander of the Kenya Air Force by President William Ruto on May 2, 2024.
She was appointed alongside other leaders including the new Chief of Defence Forces Lt Gen Charles Muriu Kahariri following the death of KDF chief Gen Francis Ogolla in a helicopter crash in April 2024.
Ahmed, who joined KDF in 1983, replaced Maj-Gen John Mugaravai Omenda, who was promoted to Lt-Gen and appointed Vice-Chief of Defence Forces.
Maj Gen Ahmed has previously held other firsts in the military leadership that is dominated by men – she was the first woman to rise to the rank of brigadier and major general.
