A former Kenya Navy officer has been arrested in connection with a motorcycle stealing syndicate operating in the Ruai and Kamulu areas.

The former military officer identified as Peter Kamau Muniu was apprehended following a well-choreographed operation led by a team from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB) and detectives from Ruai.

According to a statement from the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) on Thursday, June 6, 2024, the officers recovered a tuk-tuk which was reported stolen.

The owner of the said tuk-tuk had filed a report indicating that he found his tricycle missing from the parking lot on Tuesday 4, 2024.

DCI noted that the former Kenya Navy officer was caught red-handed with two accomplices while dismantling the said tuk-tuk.

Detectives described the former military man among the key architects of illegal dealings in the area.

“Peter Kamau Muniu, Timothy Irungu Karimi and Antony Maina Njoroge have been arrested in the wake of escalating cases of motorcycle theft in Ruai and Kamulu areas, thanks to teams from DCI Hqs Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB) and DCI Ruai,” DCI’s statement read in part.

“The three who are believed to be the architects of the illegal dealings were pursued and arrested following a tuktuk theft report by the devastated owner, who parked it on Tuesday night after work but found it missing the next day. Taking up the matter, the officers conducted an intelligence-led operation in Kamulu, recovering the said tuktuk reg. no. KTWB 975T within the homestead of Peter Kamau Muniu (a former Kenya Navy officer) with the other two suspects in the process of dismantling it,” the statement added.

Other items recovered

During the raid, the detectives also recovered a motorcycle and a Nissan Wingroad car which they argued the suspects used to distribute the dismantled parts. The two were seized and detained at Ruai Police Station.

However, DCI noted that they are still pursuing two other suspects who are believed to be part of the syndicate.

“Two other known suspects said to have sneaked away during the raid are being pursued.”

The operation came hours after DCI detectives nabbed another motor vehicle vandal in Kiamumbi. The notorious suspect identified as Francis Ndichu was apprehended while scaling a perimeter wall to vandalise a parked vehicle at night.

“Having been interrogated at length, crucial leads to accomplices and market for the stolen parts have been obtained. Further investigations ongoing,” DCI noted.
