Police officers from Laare Police Station, Igembe North in Meru County have recovered an AK-47 rifle from a robbery suspect.
The officers were responding to a mob justice incident at KK Etama Area where they rescued one Benson Muriithi, who is suspected to belong to a notorious gang that has been linked to a string of carjacking and robbery incidences in the area.
Further investigations led to the recovery of the AK-47 rifle and an empty magazine at the homestead of another gang member. The police are also holding Agnes Kanana whom they say may have important information regarding the case.
Police recover more guns
This is the second case of gun recoveries this week by police in Meru, joining a spate of such cases in a span of one week. Police on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, managed to recover four firearms (two G3 rifles, a Mini Beretta, Carbine AK47) and 22 rounds of ammunition in Lodwar Village from the home of one Ayub Kimathi who managed to escape.
A day later, a team of NPS Officers in Laikipia North Sub-County recovered a Carbine Rifle and 53 rounds of ammunition from a robbery suspect identified as Renkel Lentaam.
On May 26, police recovered a firearm loaded with 23 rounds, within Githurai, Kasarani Sub County. The gun had gone missing after three assailants attacked a female police officer and made away with the gun.
The gun was later abandoned near the gate of Githurai Police Post. DCI Kasarani is still investigating the case.
