Nyandarua woman representative asks govt to relocate mudslide victims

The Government has been urged to hasten plans to relocate the residents of Kenton village in Kinagop constituency in Nyandarua County following the danger that lurks.

Speaking during the distribution of relief food and other assorted items to the victims of the recent mudslides that left several homes affected, Nyandarua Women Representative Faith Gitau asked the government to intervene and relocate them.

Faith Gitau further explained that they fear losing the lives of the residents with the ongoing rain that has been experienced in the area.

“Kuna ile mvua ilinyesha kubwa sana nyumba zimeharibika mashamba zimeharibika nililete chakula huku a month ago lakini hawa watu hawanacahula kwa mashamba na hawana anything. The mudslide victims are suffering after being displaced, I came here a month ago to distribute relief food and other items,” she said.

“Naomba serekali ikuje itusaidie na mambo ya kuhamisha hawa watu wa Kenton kwa sababu mvua ikiendelea  kunyesha hii mawe yote tunaona hapo juu itateremka yote hadi hapa chini nyumba zao zitaharibiwa we fear tunaomba tu ziseteremke zikiteremka we might lose life,”

Also, present during the distribution exercise, Magumu location Chief Ng’ang’a Njuguna noted the serious dangers posed by hanging rocks and occasional mudslides following the heavy rains pounding the area.

Adding that they had already relocated from their homes to the nearby primary school but they are currently faced with challenges after the school reopened.

 “Permanent solution ni watafutiwe pahali wakuewe relocated hii mvua imewafanya wawe displaced  na tulikuwa tumewatoa kijiji ptukawapeleka hapa Kenton kwa shule lakini vile shule zimefunguliwa hawa watu wanashida kubwa sana because they are living informally settlement kwa sababu zao ziko na shida mingi ”he explained

“Kulitokea madhara kubwa sana wakati wa mvua barabara zilifungwa ,miti ziliteremka kwa barabara zikafunga barabara kukawa na a lot of damages ata kuingia kwa shule hapa Kenton ni shida,”

Heavy downpour

The victims were not only displaced by the heavy downpour the only road that connects the village with other neighbouring areas was destroyed.

Kenton the residents are living in fear of being buried under rubble from falling rocks bare by running water.

Floods Victims

On May 8, 2024, President Ruto declared a public holiday to mourn the people who died during the floods which also left dozens displaced.

The day was observed by national tree planting activities to help mitigate the effects of climate change.
