The Mombasa Port is expecting a record 52 vessels to dock in the next 14 days.
Five oil tankers which will discharge various petroleum and edible vegetable oils are among the vessels expected at the port.
The first contingent of three ships arrived on Monday, May 20, 2024. The vessels are Nordenery, Kota Karim and Clara, all of which are container cargos.
“Port of Mombasa will handle a record 52 vessels in the next 14 days. Among the vessels expected to call Mombasa during this period is five oil tankers which will discharge various petroleum and edible vegetable oils,” the Kenya Ports Authority announced.
Seven other vessels arrived on Tuesday, May 21, 2024. They included two container cargo ships, two general cargo ships, one palm oil tanker and Jet A1.
Four vessels will arrive on Wednesday, May 22, 2024. They include two container cargo ships, one general cargo ship, a Mogas and a sorghum empty bags ship.
Seven vessels will dock on May 23, 2024. The other six will dock on May 24, 2024, with five expected to dock on May 25, 2024.
Five other vessels will dock on May 26, 2024, with four vessels expected to dock on May 27, 2024.
The last batch of vessels is expected to arrive at the Mombasa Port on June 2, 2024.
Container traffic at the Mombasa Port grew by 11.9% in 2023.
According to a latest report, the port handled 1.6 million 20-foot equivalent container units, up from 1.45 million in 2022.
Uganda, South Sudan and the DRC were the biggest transit markets for cargo through the Mombasa Port in 2023, accounting for 62.3 percent, 52 per cent and 57 per cent of the total volumes, respectively.
Largest vessel
In 2021, the port received the largest vessel, in terms of capacity, as the facility recorded the highest performance in container handling.
Container carrier MV Ever Unity is the largest vessel in terms of capacity to call at the Port of Mombasa this year.
The vessel had a total of 3,825 TEUs (full discharge), 1,614 TEUs (full loading) and 3453 TEUs (empties loading).
Longest cargo ship
In March 2024, the Mombasa Port received the longest cargo ship to ever call on its harbours.
The container vessel dubbed MV Kotka Monrovia with an overall length of 318 meters, 43 meters in breadth, and a draft of 9.3 meters docked at the Mombasa port from Durban, South Africa to load 5,877 containers for disbursement to the port of Abu Dhabi.
