Over 500 families have been displaced by flood waters in Mandera East Sub-county, Mandera County after an Ethiopian river burst its banks.

Kenya Red Cross says River Daua broke its banks due to heavy rains experienced in the Southern Ethiopian Highlands, causing the floods in Mandera.

“After the River Daua broke its banks due to heavy rains experienced in the Southern Ethiopian Highlands, over 500 households in Mandera East Sub County have been displaced. The Kenya Red Cross has already registered the affected families to provide food and other essential items support in the coming days. Thanks to UNICEF Kenya, three hundred and fifty households have already received essential WASH items such as jerrycans, soaps, water treatment chemicals and dignity kits, as we work to reach more,” Kenya Red Cross stated.

This comes amid a forecast by the Kenya Meteorological Department predicting that sunny intervals are expected across most parts of the country, with a significant reduction in rainfall likely across various regions.

However, occasional rainfall is also expected, particularly in Western, Rift Valley, Central Kenya, and the Lake Victoria Basin.

According to the World Meteorological Organisation, El Niño conditions during the second half of 2023 contributed to a record-warm year and exacerbated many extreme events; combined with rising temperatures and more frequent and extreme hazards due to human-induced climate change.
