A senior police officer on Wednesday tragically lost his life in Kware River in Machakos county.
According to a police report seen by K24 Digital, Cyprian Walunya Kasili, a chief inspector based at a Ruai Police Station, drowned when his vehicle was swept away by the water.
Police who noted that the incident was reported by members of the public said the officer was driving home when the unfortunate incident occurred.
The members of the public had reported that a vehicle had submerged in the water, prompting police to visit the scene where they retrieved the officer’s body.
“It was reported by members of the public at 1630 hours that there was a vehicle submerged in River Kware. Police visited the scene and retrieved the body of one No 237575 CI Cyprian Walunya Kasili base commander Ruai who had been swept away and drowned in his car.
“It was established that he was driving back to his home in Lowland Estate within Kware area,” the police report read in parts.
The body was moved to Patjud Funeral Home awaiting an autopsy. At the time of reporting, the vehicle was still submerged in the water.
Flood situation
The latest comes amid the ongoing flood situation wreaking havoc including deaths, and destruction of property and infrastructure across the country.
So dire is the situation that the government has implemented measures and set up strategies to help deal with the ravaging floods witnessed in different parts of the country.
Yesterday, the government announced that 10 more people lost their lives within 24 hours bringing the total death toll to a staggering 179.
The State additionally stated that 20 individuals had been reported missing whereas 125 others were injured and are currently receiving treatment.
“The ongoing flooding has displaced an additional 1,127 households, totalling 31,341 households and affecting 195,011 people. Displacement camps have been set up to provide alternative accommodation,” government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura said.
Mwaura also asked Kenyans living in flood-prone areas to evacuate within 48 hours, highlighting that the continuous above-average rainfall is expected to worsen the flood situation.
He further urged Kenyans to exercise caution and adhere to guidelines and flood alerts to avert such cases.
“The government urges all citizens to remain vigilant and heed the weather and flood alerts issued regularly by government agencies. The government calls upon Kenyans residing in flood-prone areas to relocate within 48 hours, including areas near dams, water reservoirs, mudslide and landslide-prone areas, and riparian lands. Alternative accommodation will be provided to those affected,” Mwaura assured.
