President William Ruto on Thursday, April 25, 2024, chaired a meeting with the multi-agency response team on floods at State House, Nairobi.

Speaking during the meeting, the Head of State highlighted that the rains have wreaked havoc across the country and proposed the relocation of those in dangerous parts of Nairobi to National Youth Service (NYS) land.

“The rains have been truly a blessing to us as a nation and we have seen a lot of turnaround because of the rains but also we have a challenge now of floods in different areas and therefore it is important for us to be proactive in terms of which interventions we can make, there are citizens living in very dangerous places and those are the most vulnerable at this point.

“We need to certainly understand that so that we can inform citizens who are in places that pose dangers to them and begin to relocate them. I already told the National Youth Service to provide us with some land to relocate some of the people who are in the most dangerous parts of Nairobi,” Ruto said.

The country’s first-in-command also directed relevant security agencies including the military to move with speed and deploy personnel to affected areas.

Ruto also reiterated the government’s commitment to safeguarding lives saying they have launched a strategic collaboration with various entities to ensure the response plan is effective.

“I asked the military to provide some of the capabilities they have to support citizens, I am happy yesterday they walked with our teams in different parts of the country including Machakos and other areas. We need to put everybody on their lap so that we can overcome this short season as we encourage farmers to continue with what they do,” Ruto added.
