President William Ruto on Sunday donated Ksh2 million to the burial contributions for the 11 Kenyatta University (KU) students who tragically lost their lives in a road accident that occurred on Monday.

First Lady Rachel Ruto presented Ruto’s donation to the university’s Vice Chancellor Prof Wainaina when she attended the memorial service for the departed students.

Addressing the students, the First Lady expressed sadness over the incident saying as an alumnus she was heartbroken by the news of the deaths.

She also assured the victims’ families that she was standing with them in prayer and support during the hard times.

“I would like to present a contribution and donation of Ksh2 million from our President William Ruto to support the families and the entire work as we prepare to send off our children,

“They were not just students, they were also family members in their respective homes. They were bright students, full of potential and eager to learn, graduate and go out to conquer the world,” Rachel said.

The First Lady went on to state that she was praying for the 47 students currently under treatment and wished them a speedy recovery.

She, at the same time, expressed gratitude to the institution’s management for supporting the victims of the accident and encouraged everyone to honour the memories of the victims by creating a more compassionate world.

Further, the President’s wife addressed motorists urging them to be vigilant when on the roads to prevent reoccurrence of similar accidents.

The unfortunate accident which involved a Kenyatta University bus and a trailer occurred past Maungu in Voi sub-county last week.

The institution on Saturday appealed to Kenyans for financial assistance to cater for funeral arrangements for the 11 students.

In their statement shared on Saturday, March 23, 2024, the university’s management affirmed that the contributions would also be used to cater for the medical expenses of the students currently undergoing treatment.

“Kenyatta University humbly reaches out to you for financial support following the tragic road accident at Maungu, Voi that claimed 11 students and left many casualties,” the institution’s statement read in parts.

“The tragedy has left our KU community shaken. We earnestly seek your support for all those impacted to help defray medical, funeral and other expenses.”

Those interested have been asked to channel their contributions through paybill number 247247, account no: 1130296626073.

Alternatively, those interested can contribute through the university’s bank account name, Kenyatta University under account no 1130296626073 – Equity Bank, Kenyatta University branch, swift code: EQBLKENAXXX.
