Detectives drawn from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Friday, January 26, 2024, nabbed at least six suspected members of a car theft syndicate operating within the Nairobi County region and neighbouring counties.
In a statement, DCI documented a blow-to-blow account of how they successfully cornered and arrested the suspects notorious for stealing motor vehicles from various residential and social parking yards and recovered at least three motor vehicles.
The operations led by the Nairobi Regional Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau and DCI Kayole began in Thika Makongeni estate in Kiambu County where Timothy Ndegwa a prime suspect was arrested at his residence.
Upon his arrest, sleuths recovered a registration plate number KBR 957C that led to the second arrest in Kenyatta Road.
DCI said, the second suspect George Kimani Wangechi was nabbed with a suspected stolen white Toyota Fielder fitted with registration plate nos. KCC 458K.
“On further interrogation, the suspects confessed to having earlier stolen a red Isuzu DMAX within Kayole, which they sold to a buyer in Nyeri through one of their accomplices by the name Stephen Kamau Maganjo,” DCI stated.
The operation team would later proceed to Narumoru where the Isuzu DMAX was recovered while being driven by Antony Wanjohi Theuri, who was also arrested as the third suspect and escorted to DCI offices in Nairobi.
Further interrogations of the suspects led detectives to a fourth accomplice, Boniface Gitemengo Gachanja, who was cornered and arrested within Githurai.
Gitemengo would later lead authorities to Limuru’s Flyover area where his partner in crime Josphat Ikua Mwangi was arrested.
“Mwangi was found in possession of a suspected stolen Toyota Corolla fitted with registration no. KBA 163Y. The vehicle was recovered and detained at DCI offices,” DCI stated.
The sixth suspect Alois Tabu Ojiambo, was traced and arrested at Kariobangi.
“The suspect is currently being interrogated by detectives hoping to make more recoveries in Nairobi and Nakuru counties,” DCI noted.
