Contemporary Kenyan rapper Juliani says he was not comfortable recording Up-Close with Betty interview in his house as that would “subject him to be being judged”.
Juliani’s interview was shot in two locations – Dandora and Nyama Mama restaurant in Westlands, Nairobi.
Revealing why the K24 TV production crew could not get his house as a shoot venue, Juliani said: “The reason why we did not start [recording this interview] in my house is because I wanted a space where I could be myself without being judged. A place I can be stupid, make mistakes and there will be nobody [such as neighbours and viewers] to judge me. [Let my remarks not be taken out of context], I do not mind showing where I live, or who exactly I am.”
The Up-Close with Betty format often begins with an interview in the subject’s house, and, thereafter, to where the interviewee works, and finally to locations which the subject deems necessary to be captured in the shoot.
Juliani’s interview did not follow that format upon his request.
