Azimio, Kenya Kwanza to make submissions as bipartisan talks resume

National Dialogue Committee (Nadco) has resumed its sittings at the Bomas of Kenya today October 2, 2023.

Nadco, which is co-chaired by Azimio principal Kalonzo Musyoka and National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichungwa, is set to receive submissions today from both Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance and Kenya Kwanza political factions.

The dialogue committee started receiving submissions from the public on September 22 after various groups sent memoranda on proposals they wanted to be considered during the talks.

Apart from Azimio and Kenya Kwanza, other entities expected to submit their proposals to the dialogue committee include; the Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC), Homa Bay Interface Community Health Desk, Former Busia Senator Amos Wako, Kenya Institute for Public Research Analysis, Public Service Commission, Trans Nzoia County Communities’ Council, Information Communication Technology Association of Kenya, Council of Governors and lawmakers including senators Ledama Olekina, Enoch Wambua and Tom Ojienda.

Monday is also the last day for the submissions.

The 10-member dialogue committee was set up to resolve a bitter political feud following a spate of deadly protests over electoral reforms and the high cost of living.

Azimio leader Raila Odinga led a series of demonstrations early this year that compelled the government to set up the dialogue committee.

Raila called off demonstrations in April and May after President William Ruto agreed to dialogue, but those talks broke down and the protesters returned to the streets.

The second dialogue committee is also facing an uphill task of harmonizing the agendas brought by Azimio and Kenya Kwanza.

Azimio wants to discuss the rising cost of living as well as electoral reforms after Raila lost Ruto, claiming he was cheated of victory. However, Kenya Kwanza does not want the dialogue committee to discuss these two issues.

Raila vowed to return to the streets if Azimio’s demands are not met. The opposition had insisted that the dialogue committee should reach an agreement in 30 days.
