The director-general of the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics, Zachary Mwangi, has released the 2019 Census report.
Mr Mwangi said that total enumerated persons in the exercise conducted in August is at 47.6 million, with majority of the population being female.
Of the 47,564,296 enumerated Kenyans are: 23,548,056 men, 24,014,716 women and 1,524 inter-sex people.
The population grew by 9.9 million, from 37.7 million recorded in 2009 while the average household declined to 3.9 in 2019 from 4.2.
During the 2019 Census report unveiling on Monday at State House, President Kenyatta thanked Kenyans for turning out for the national census that was the first under the 2010 Constitution.
“It was the first of a kind in our history. We fully embrace use of technology in the exercise. The mobile devices used in the census were assembled by our local universities and the data management software created by our own KNBS,” said President Kenyatta.
The President said KNBS will release, as scheduled, other volumes of the 2019 Census report to Kenyans and other stakeholders.
“So therefore, we direct all ministries and departments to utilise these results, including counties and development partners,” said the Head of State.
“I wish to thank and commend the KNBS, the chairman, board, management and all the many thousands, as well as elder, who participated in the job well done,” said Mr Kenyatta.
