Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has vowed to fight cartels who allegedly demand millions of shillings from City Hall for supposedly supplying ‘air.’
Sonko singled out Proland Ltd, a firm he claimed was behind loss of Sh175 million for payments of goods not supplied.
“Proland… recorded a consent with Nairobi County during the previous administration to be paid Sh35 million for nothing. The firm has so far been paid Sh175 million and they are now demanding more money from the county,” claimed Sonko.
The governor also accused police officers of colluding with cartels from his predecessor’s regime to defraud the county of taxpayers’ funds.
Speaking at City Hall on Wednesday when plainclothed police officers stormed the Finance Department to arrest county finance officers over the Proland case, Sonko accused some police officers of ganging up with cartels to intimidate officials.
“Every time these cartels come with police officers, arrest our finance staff and force them to pay more millions at the expense of taxpayers, so far they have already been paid Sh175 million for supplying air,” Sonko said.
The governor said that going by the records available, the same company was paid over Sh50 million by the previous regime.
“They were paid over Sh50 million during the previous administration for supplying nothing, but as long as I am the governor of Nairobi City, I will not let the cartels steal county money,” he said.
