Embattled Uasin Gishu Senator Jackson Mandago is now being detained at the Central Police Station in Nakuru after being grilled at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) offices.
Mandango and his co-accused in the Finland/Canada scholarship scam will spend the night in police custody awaiting arraignment in court on Thursday morning.
The accused were holed up at the Rift Valley Regional Directorate of Criminal Investigations Headquarters in Nakuru for the better part of Wednesday evening August 16, 2023.
Mandago was nabbed on Wednesday at his residence before being taken to DCI offices in Nakuru.
This comes after a warrant was issued to arrest the senator and three others after they failed to appear before Nakuru Chief Magistrate for plea-taking.
Prior to his arrest, police issued a statement claiming he went into hiding on Tuesday, August 15, 2023.
National Police Service (NPS) appealed to the Senator to present himself to the nearest police station and asked the members of the public to share any information that could lead to his arrest.
The Uasin Gishu Senator found himself in trouble over the Ksh1.1 billion controversial Overseas Educational programme in Finland and Canada that has left many parents and students in tears.
Local scholarship
Mandago’s arrest came hours after President William Ruto ordered the matter investigated and those found culpable arrested.
Ruto, while speaking at the devolution conference in Eldoret, also promised to give local scholarships to the affected students.
“Wakati uchunguzi utamalizika, ntaona vile tunaweza saidia wale wanafunzi waliohusika na hii matatizo. Hawa ni watoto wetu, tutawapanga vile tunaweza wapatia scholarship ya hapa nyumbani ili waendeleze masomo yao,” he said.
