9,673 students who qualified for degree courses have chosen to be placed in TVET institutions

Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ezekiel Machogu has revealed that nearly 10,000 students who qualified to join universities opted to join Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions.

Speaking on Monday, July 31, 2023, while releasing the placement results for students who sat for their Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination in 2022, Machogu disclosed that 9,673 applicants who qualified for degree courses chose to be placed in TVET institutions.

“I wish to point out that 9,673 applicants who qualified for degree courses chose to be placed in TVET institutions,” Machagu said.

The Education CS noted that the Commission for University Education and the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority approved 768,624 capacities for student placement in 69 universities, 210 TVET institutions and 3 Secondary Teacher Training Colleges in the 2023/2024 placement cycle.

Machogu additionally disclosed that 870,561 students who sat for KCSE in 2022 were eligible for placement to universities and colleges but only a total of 285,698 students submitted applications for placement to various institutions.

“A total of 285,167 secured places in degree, diploma, craft certificate and artisan courses in 282 training institutions. The number of students who secured placement to degree programmes is 140,107 (130,485 to public universities and 9622 private universities). This represents 80.9% of the 173,244 students who qualified for degree programmes,” Machogu said.

“144,500 applicants have been placed in TVET institutions, while 560 applicants have been placed to Secondary Teacher Training Colleges,” he added.

The placement results for all the applicants will now be posted on the KUCCPS Student’s Portal. The
results can also be accessed by sending the applicant’s KCSE index number through SMS
to 20842.
