Eight police officers and their families will spend Friday night in the cold after a fierce fire ravaged their houses at Majengo chief’s camp in Nanyuki Town in Laikipia County.
The inferno, whose cause is yet to be known, destroyed property worth millions of shillings, including a private car.
No injuries or fatalities were reported in the incident.
Laikipia East Critical Infrastructure Protection Unit (CIPU) commander, Geoffrey Kamau, confirmed the incident.
Kamau told K24 Digital that in four of the affected houses, nothing was salvaged.
Attempts by Nanyuki fire-fighting unit to extinguish the fire bore little fruit as extensive damage had already been done to the eight houses.
The Laikipia East police boss says investigations to ascertain the cause of the fire have commenced.
“No one was in any of the houses when the units went up in flames,” said Kamau.
The police chief says the inferno was put out before it ravaged more than 42 housing units in the same locality.
Kamau has urged members of the public, particularly those living in Laikipia East, to offer help to the affected police officers and their families.
“I urge members of the public to assist the victims with bedding, clothing and building materials if possible,” he said.
One of the victims, Moses Kariuki, told K24 Digital that he lost everything in the fire, including his important work and identification documents.
