Kitui East MP Nimrod Mbai was on Monday, July 3, 2023, caught on camera assaulting a Kenya Power officer who was disconnecting power from the legislator’s Kitengela home.

The officers reportedly disconnected the power since it had been illegally connected to the MP’s residence.

In the Monday evening incident, Mbai confronted the officers hurling insults before losing his cool.

“You want to cut power to my children. I am a man, I can’t allow that,” Mbai is heard shouting in the clip.

Mbai then slaps the officer in the heat of the moment before reaching out for his pistol – but did not produce it.

Kenya Power responds

According to Kenya Power senior security officer Peter Kathusia, the connection, which extended by over a kilometre, was an illegal connection overloading a nearby transformer and endangering lives.

A contingent of Kenya Power officials and police officers who raided the residence on Tuesday recovered an illegal power metre and cables belonging to the power distribution company.

“We have recovered Kenya Power aluminium power cables and a metre from the house. We will also pull down the entire power line. Such an illegal power line amounts to a time bomb for the occupants of the house,” Kathusia said.

Two workers were arrested and taken to Kitengela Police Station. The MP was not in the house during the Tuesday raid.
