Machakos-based journalists have threatened to boycott Machakos County government events after one of them was attacked.

In a statement, the journalists said that Pascal Ndei was attacked last week by Machakos-based political activists.

According to the journalists, the attackers claimed that the scribe had been writing negative stories about the current county leadership.

“The attackers claimed that the journalist has continued to write negative stories about the current county leadership,” the journos said

The journalists now are demanding an explanation on whether the political activists were under instructions from the Machakos County government.

Three suspects linked to the attack were arrested on Monday, June 26, 2023, and later released on police bail the same day.

Following the attack, the journalists are now demanding assurance of their security as they discharge their duties.

“We demand assurance of our safety while discharging our duties and if the attacks continue, Machakos County Journalists will boycott all the county functions until our safety is guaranteed,” they added.

“We demand an apology, from the County government in the event they were involved in the attack and if they were not involved they should denounce the criminals whom we believe are well known to them.”

However, the journalists have explained that they have had a cordial relationship with the Machakos County government.

“We have had a good relationship with the current county government leadership since it took over office,” they said.

They have asked Governor Wavinya Ndeti to ensure the attack is investigated and the culprits brought to book.
