5 killed, houses torched in Lamu terror attack

At least five people have been killed in a terror attack in Lamu which left several homesteads burnt down and properties stolen.

According to a police report, gunmen in a group of between six to 30 attacked villagers in Kibaoni, Lamu West sub-county.

The gunmen, suspected to belong to the Al-Shabaab group, killed livestock and burnt houses belonging to the villagers.

Among those killed by the gunmen include 60-year-old Samuel Chomba Gacurai, 19-year-old high school student Barrack Hussein who had gone for a mid-term break, Reuben Mwangi Nyamu, Peter Mureithi Githinji and Mwenda alias Sumbua.

The gunmen also attacked and burnt the homes of Elizabeth Wairimo, Daniel Njogu Mureithi, Harrison Njogu Miano, Ndei, Lawrence Kinyua Gitari and Gilbert Mwangi.

Police who responded to the incident recovered four spent cartridges and one live ammunition all of 7.62mm, one part of a firearm (dust plate of AK47 rifle) and one used glove.

After the attack, the assailants disappeared towards the forest.

Among the items stolen from the homestead of the victims include 30 goats, Ksh60,000, two mobile phones, one bicycle, and an unknown number of chickens.
