Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang’ula has announced a new date for the National Prayer Breakfast.
The event was initially scheduled for Wednesday, May 31, 2023, but has been rescheduled to Wednesday, June 7, 2023.
In a statement, Wetang’ula said the event has been postponed due to “factors beyond control”.
“I wish to Notify the Members of Parliament of Kenya, members of the press, and the general public that the 20th annual National Prayer Breakfast which had been initially scheduled for Wednesday, 31st May 2023 has now been rescheduled to Wednesday, 7th June 2023. The venue shall be Safari Park Hotel, Nairobi,” Wetang’ula stated.
The purpose of the National Prayer Breakfast is to meet, engage, interact and together pray for the nation in the company of fellow leaders from all sectors of society.
The event is normally organised under the offices of the Speakers of the National Assembly and the speaker of the Senate; and organized by a group of volunteers which make up the National Prayer Breakfast Organizing Committee.
The event comes at a time the National Assembly is on a long recess and is scheduled to reconvene on June 6, 2023.
National Prayer Breakfast history
The first Kenya National Prayer Breakfast took place in May, 2003, shortly after President Mwai Kibaki came into office. The Prayer Breakfast Movement started in the US Congress 64 years ago.
The Prayer Breakfast Movement in Kenya, which is modelled after that of the US, dates back 30 years when a small group of men started meeting in Nairobi with the aim of ultimately starting a “National Prayer Breakfast.”
