Kenya finished second in the 2019 World Athletics Championships with 11 medals: five gold, two silver and four bronze medals.

The result was a replication of the 2017 World Championships tally in London when Kenya got the exact number of medals in the same order.

On Sunday, Timothy Cheruiyot won the men’s 1,500m to clinch Kenya’s fifth gold medal in Doha.

It was third time lucky for Cheruiyot who has won silver in the last two events, playing second fiddle to Elijah Manangoi but with the latter not in Doha due to an injury, it was his to lose.

Cheruiyot has been the best athlete this season over the distance and his victory was not a big surprise, having won the 2019 Diamond League Trophy.

His gold media followed on the successes of Ruth Chepngetich (women’s marathon), Beatrice Chepkoech (women’s steeplechase), Conseslus Kipruto (men’s steeplechase) and Hellen Obiri (women’s 5,000m).
