The Kenya Railways has announced the suspension of an October 2 order prohibiting travellers from entering the Standard Gauge Railway train, Madaraka Express, with foodstuff and beverages.
This comes two days after a youthful female passenger stripped naked at the Mombasa terminus in protest after she was blocked from entering the train with foodstuff.
The fuming woman removed her dress and remained with a bra and panty, caring less of what other passengers thought of her.
Other female commuters and a security officer attempted to cover and calm her down, but she would hear none of it.
The woman had a child, who watched on while confused, throughout the incident.
On October 2, Kenya Railways announced that it had barred travellers from accessing the trains while carrying food and drinks.
But, three days later, following massive backlash on social media, the Kenya Railways has lifted that directive.
“Following customer feedback on the notice prohibiting entry of beverages and foodstuff into the SGR termini and stations, Kenya Railways wishes to reassure our customers that we have instituted negotiations with our service providers to offer improved services in the trains and stations,” said Kenya Railways in its press notice.
“In lieu of this, KR wishes to inform our esteemed customers that a decision has been taken to suspend the directive until further notice to allow for conclusion of negotiations.
“Please, note that the decision only applies to entry of foodstuff. Alcoholic drinks are still strictly prohibited into the termini and stations.”
