Police in Hoima District, western Uganda, are holding in custody a middle-aged woman accused of killing her boyfriend after she allegedly found him taking antiretroviral (ARV) tablets, the country’s Monitor newspaper reports.

Police said the suspect hacked 35-year-old Emmanuel Tumusiime to death at his home in Kijumba cell in Kigorobya Town Council at around 6pm on Wednesday, December 11.

Julius Hakiza, the Albertine regional police spokesperson, told the Monitor that the suspect fatally hit Tumusiime in the head using an axe.

“Upon realising that the lover was dead, the suspect locked the house and jumped on a Boda boda to Hoima central police where she reported a case of murder,” said Hakiza.

The suspect told police that she killed her boyfriend after finding him taking ARV tablets.

“She reportedly claimed that she was hurt and disappointed that her partner could have infected her with HIV,” reports the Monitor.

The woman, who is being detained at the Hoima Central Police Station, will be charged with murder, area police spokesperson, Hakiza, said.

Tumusiime’s body was taken to a Hoima District hospital morgue, police said.

“We call upon the victims of HIV/AIDS to always inform their partners and attend counselling centers because falling victim of HIV/AIDS isn’t the end of life,” advised Hakiza.
