A woman and her daughter have been charged in a Nairobi court with stealing a four-month-old baby at Uhuru Park, Nairobi County.

Grace Akinyi Misilia and Nelly Achieng Misiani were accused of stealing the baby on March 1, 2021, from the house help who resided at Majengo in Gikomba.

While appearing before Nairobi Chief Magistrate Martha Mutuku on Wednesday, March 10, the suspects denied two charges levelled against them, that is, conspiracy to commit a felony and trafficking in persons.

According to the charge sheet, the prosecution claimed that on March 1, while at Uhuru Park, Akinyi and her daughter Achieng jointly with others, conspired to commit a felony, namely trafficking in persons, a baby known as E.T aged four months, for the purpose of exploitation.

The two faced another charge, that on the same date and place jointly with others not before court, they transported E.T from Nairobi to Bungoma.

After denying the charges, Akinyi who is the main suspect in the case, told the court that they met the mother of the baby when she was looking for a job as a house help.

The prosecution, through Anderson Gikunda, told the court that Akinyi’s husband has since been charged with the same offence and remanded in custody.

Gikunda also said that other accused persons have a similar matter at Busia Law Courts where they are expected in the same court on March 26.

Further, the state counsel said the state will be objecting to the release of the duo on bail pending the hearing of their trial.

The prosecution also plans to consolidate the Busia cases with that of Akinyi’s husband.

The court ordered Akinyi and Achieng to be remanded at Industrial Area to allow the investigating officer to transport the duo to Busia to face more charges over trafficking persons.
