Teachers’ union boss Wilson Sossion is back as the secretary-general of the Kenya Union of Teachers (Knut), days after officials edged him out.

The Employment and Labour Relations Court reinstated Mr Sossion as Knut’s boss on Monday, pending hearing and determination of case challenging his ejection by Knut’s National Executive Council (NEC).

Justice Hellen Wasilwa also allowed Sossion to access Knut’s bank accounts.

“The Honourable Court be pleased to order the status quo of the Knut register of officials obtaining prior to August 29, 2019, to be maintained with regard to the operations of the Knut bank accounts at Kenya Commercial Bank, Equity Bank and Standard Chartered Bank pending further orders of the court,” read Justice Wasilwa’s order.

Sossion, through his lawyer Judith Guserwa, accused Knut’s NEC of illegally convening a meeting and purporting to remove him despite a court order issued last week stopping the meeting or his removal.

His ‘illegal’ ouster followed months of Knut fighting with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) which withdrew union members.

In July this year, TSC deregistered the ODM nominated MP after Labour Court allowed the teachers’ employer to strike him out in its roll of tutors for joining politics.
