The wife of Derek Chauvin, the Minneapolis police officer charged with murder over the death of George Floyd, has filed for the dissolution of her 10-year-marriage.
In a statement, Kellie Chauvin, 46, said she was “devastated by Floyd’s death and her utmost sympathy lies with his family”.
Floyd, an African-American was killed while pleading for air as Derek Chauvin pressed a knee into his neck for several minutes during an arrest.
Derek Chauvin was later fired before being charged on Friday, May 29 with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.
“This evening, I spoke with Kellie Chauvin and her family,” Kellie Chauvin’s lawyer told ABC.
“She is devastated by Mr Floyd’s death and her utmost sympathy lies with his family, with his loved ones and with everyone who is grieving this tragedy.
“She has filed for dissolution of her marriage to Derek Chauvin. While Ms Chauvin has no children from her current marriage, she respectfully requests that her children, her elder parents, and her extended family be given safety and privacy during this difficult time.”
Kellie Chauvin was born in Laos in 1974 during a time of war, reports NBC News.
In 1977, her family fled to safety in Thailand, where they lived in a refugee camp, The Associated Press reported. In 2018, she was crowned Mrs. Minnesota.
