Two widows of a former colonial-era chief in Elgeyo Marakwet County are embroiled in a vicious court battle over control of his vast estate estimated at Sh3 billion.
Kibor Talai, who died seven years ago, left behind vast tracks of land under commercial trees and several herds of cattle in Lelan area in Marakwet West and 1,500 acre of agricultural land adjacent to Moi University main campus in Kesses constituency, Uasin Gishu County.
Talai died in 2012 at the age of 95 and his first wife Tapyotin Talai, 84, went to court seeking authority to control the estate with her five children.
She argues that her co-wife, Irene Talai (pictured), 54, who has three children, did not contribute anything to the acquisition of the property.
Presiding judge Stephen Githinji on Friday promised to expedite the succession dispute and set two days, November 25 and 26, for hearing before determining the matter that has been pending for the last six years.
