Amani National Congress (ANC) party leader Musalia Mudavadi says his party would oppose the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) if it fails to address the concerns of the citizenry.
Musalia said constitutional amendments should benefit all Kenyans and not the interests of a few political elites.
The former deputy prime minister, who spoke on Sunday at the Maraba Anglican Church of Kenya in Kakamega town, said it has become a trend for politicians to amend the Constitution every transitional election.
“We have been witnessing this clamour for amendment of the constitution coinciding with a transitional election for selfish political interests which has to stop,” he observed.
He urged the electorate to read and understand the contents of the BBI report to make an informed decision during the proposed referendum.
The soft-spoken politician called for national discourse and a sober debate when the report is finally unveiled.
He condemned the recent abusive language on the President’s family by Emurua Dikirr MP Johana Ng’eno and his Kepseret Counterpart Oscar Sudi.
He said such sentiments by leaders have the potential of raising political temperatures and igniting ethnic tension in the country.
