Wetang’ula reveals details of his meeting with Kenyans living in Guernsey Island

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has revealed the details of his meeting with Kenyans living in Guernsey one of the Channel Islands in Great Britain.

In a statement via his official social media accounts on Saturday, January 11, 2025, Wetang’ula stated that he had met and engaged with the leadership of the Kenyan community in Guernsey on the sidelines of his official tour of duty.

During the meeting, Wetang’ula says they delved into several issues and policies that directly impact their seamless stay and integration noting that once addressed, it will enhance their experience on the Island.

“Through our constructive interactions, I took note of several pertinent concerns, particularly policies that directly impact their seamless integration and stay in Guernsey. These issues, once addressed, will undoubtedly enhance their experience while amplifying their capacity to contribute even more robustly to the local economy,” Wetang’ula said.

The third in command further revealed that he assured the community of the support from President William Ruto’s administration facilitated through its Mission in London, which aims to encourage investments and partnerships.

“I assured the community of the Government of Kenya’s steadfast support, facilitated through its Mission in London. This commitment underscores our shared objective of fostering success abroad while encouraging investments and partnerships for mutual growth and prosperity,” he added.

In addition, the national assembly speaker stated that 500 Kenyans are currently living in Guernsey which has a population of approximately 65,000 residents noting their unwavering dedication to elevating Kenya’s profile internationally aligns with the Kenya Kwanza’s foreign employment and collaboration strategy, which seeks to leverage the diaspora’s potential for national development.

Wetang’ula’s official tour

The Speaker is currently in Guernsey attending the meeting of the Standing Committee of the Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth (CSPOC).

He pointed out that he is attending the meeting in the capacity of a Standing Committee Member to represent the African region which is expected to firm up the Agenda of the 28th Conference of the CSPOC conference to be held in India in 2026.

“Currently in Guernsey; One of the Channel Islands in Great Britain attending the meeting of the Standing Committee of the Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth (CSPOC). I am here in the capacity of a Standing Committee Member to represent the African region,” he revealed.

He is accompanied by the Kenya High Commissioner to the UK, Amb. Catherine Karemu, the Deputy Clerk of the National Assembly, Mr. Jeremiah Ndombi and the Chief of Staff in my Office, Mr. Benson Milimo.

CSPOC was established in 1969 and brings together the Speakers and Presiding Officers of the National Parliaments of the independent sovereign states of the Commonwealth.

The delegate Speakers who are members of the Standing Committee attending include; Hon. Milton Dick (Australia), Hon. Greg Fergus (Canada), Sir Richard McMahon (Guernsey), Hon. Om Birla (India), Papali’iLi’o Oloipola Taeu Masipau (Samoa), Bridgid Annisette-George (Trinidad and Tobago), Lord Frakafanua (Tonga), Hon. Sir. Lindsay Hoyle (UK).
