Weatherman predicts poor rains and prolonged dry spells in October-December outlook
By Lutta Njomo, September 7, 2025The Kenya Meteorological Department on Friday, September 5, 2025, released a detailed weather outlook for the last three months of the year.
The Weather Outlook for October-December 2025 predicts uneven rainfall distribution and isolated storms across most parts of the country.
The Kenya Met Department detailed that most parts of the Southeastern lowlands, the Northwest, and the coastal regions will receive below-average rainfall.
Areas in the southeastern lowlands include Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta counties, while Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo counties fall in the north-eastern.
The coastal counties of Mombasa, Tana River, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale will also receive below-average rainfall between October and December 2025.

Nairobi
Nairobi, which has in the past experienced flooding and displacement of people due to rains, is expected to get near to below-average rainfall during this short rain season.
According to the weatherman, a similar pattern is expected to be experienced in South and Central Rift Valley, most of the Lake Victoria Basin, the Highlands East of the Rift Valley and parts of Kajiado, and western Samburu and Marsabit.
Meanwhile, the Highlands west of the Rift Valley and parts of Northwestern Kenya are projected to receive above-average rainfall.
Fair rainfall distribution in Western
With several parts of the country expected to receive low rainfall, the weatherman sent a positive outlook to residents of the Western part of the country by predicting slightly above the long-term seasonal average, with fair to good distribution and occasional storms.
Areas within this jurisdiction include Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, and Bungoma, among others.
However, the neighbouring Lake Victoria Basin region (Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, and southern Busia) rainfall is expected to be slightly below the long-term average with occasional storms.
