Evangelical churches drawn from Kiambu and Murang’a counties now want a constitutional review that will create a ministry of religion.

Under the Covenant Clergy Alliance, the group said the church should have its own ministry with their own Cabinet secretary, principal secretary and all other attendant departments.

The church leaders were speaking at the Calvary Chosen Centre in Thika during a prayer service, where they claimed the church has been left out of the constitutional change debate.

Bishop David Ngari, who spoke on their behalf, said they will support Building Bridges Initiative and make sure their proposal is considered in the proposed referendum.

“The church should not be registered as a society as it is the case now, and should be removed from the Attorney-General’s docket and appended to a new ministry which will regulate the church in matters pertaining to religion,” Ngari said.

Ngari commended the Catholic Church for taking a firm stand against corruption and barring politicians from giving donations in places of worship.

“As members of the clergy, we support the move by our Catholic brethren. The church has the moral authority to defeat the spirit of corruption, we should lead from the front,” he said.
