The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party has conceded defeat in the Msambweni by-election.
The party’s candidate Omar Boga lost the December 15 election to Independent candidate Feisal Bader. Bader, who is strongly linked to Deputy President William Ruto’s political camp, amassed 15,251 votes against Boga’s 10,444.
The electoral board, IEBC, on Wednesday morning (December 16) declared Bader the winner in the contest that attracted high-octane campaigns.
ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna, who recently went on a sledging spree against the party’s rebel MP, Aisha Jumwa, during the heat of the Msambweni campaigns, took to Twitter on Wednesday to concede the election outcome.
“Congratulations to all [the] winners in yesterday’s by-elections, especially ODM Party candidates in Kisumu North and Dabaso Wards. We came up short in Msambweni and Wundayi/Mbale, but we regroup and forge ahead. Thanks to all our teams everywhere for the great effort,” tweeted Sifuna in a message retweeted by ODM Party’s official Twitter account.
The Msambweni parliamentary seat fell vacant on March 9, 2020 after the holder, Suleiman Dori, succumbed to cancer. He was aged 42.
