We are coming for you: KeNHA gives illegal billboard owners a 30-day ultimatum

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has issued a 30-day ultimatum to all billboard owners with unauthorised or non-compliant structures along major highways.

In a notice issued in the latest MyGov publication on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, the authority announced a rising concern about the encroachment of structures along National Highways.

“The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has noted with concern the continued encroachment onto road reserves along National Highways,” KeNHA stated.

Amid the encroachment of various structures, KeNHA has announced its mandate to remove any illegal structures, billboard advertisements, and directional signs within the KeNHA road reserves.

“Under the Kenya Roads Act, 2007 (Sections 49 & 50), KeNHA is mandated to control roadside developments and remove any illegal structures, billboards, advertisements, and directional signs within the KeNHA road reserves,” KeNHA said.

KeNHA has therefore maintained that any persons with illegal structures, businesses, or developments, including unapproved and unrenewed billboards, advertisements, and directional signs on road reserves, should take them down within thirty days from Tuesday, November 25, 2025.

“All persons with illegal structures, businesses, and developments, including unapproved and unrenewed billboards, advertisements, and directional signs on road reserves, are hereby required to remove them within thirty (30) days from the date of this notice,” KeNHA noted.

Warning on compliance

On the other hand, KeNHA has warned that failure to take down the structures will lead to enforcement action, including demolition and recovery of related costs, without further notice to the owners/agents of the said unapproved structures/unapproved or unrenewed billboards.

“Failure to comply will lead to enforcement action, including demolition and recovery of related costs, without further notice to the owners/agents of the said unapproved structures/unapproved or unrenewed billboards,” KeNHA announced.

While issuing the notice, the authority further directed affected persons seeking clarification with KeNHA are welcome to reach out to the authority either via phone call or email or visit the KeNHA Headquarters Road Reserve Department.

“For clarification, you are advised to call 0800-211-244 / 0700423606 or email dg@kenha.co.ke or visit the KeNHA Headquarters Road Reserve Department,” KeNHA stated.
