Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has expressed firm support for the establishment of a nuclear power plant, calling it a transformational project that will drive sustainable economic growth and support key development agendas for both her county and the nation.

Speaking on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, during the devolution conference in Homa Bay County, Wanga hailed the proposed nuclear power initiative as a model of devolution potential, emphasising that the project aligns with the country’s long-term goals for industrialisation, job creation, and reliable energy access.

“We support the Nuclear Power Project because it is expected to supply reliable, affordable, and sustainable power for economic growth. Full implementation of this project is crucial for the future of the whole region,” Wanga noted.

She highlighted the role nuclear power will play in unlocking Homa Bay’s economic potential through agro-processing and other industrial activities.

“Nuclear power will support our value-addition and agro-processing agenda, covering investments and industries that we need for job creation,” she stated.

Governor Wanga also shared insights into the county’s governance model, crediting the smooth cooperation among leaders as a key factor in driving development forward.

“Let me share three critical success factors for our county. One is the unity of purpose for the county leadership; we all work together as a team to move our county forward,” she said.

“The second is the support of the county assembly, which has consistently backed transformative initiatives like this one.”

Kenya nuclear power

The governor’s endorsement of the nuclear project comes amid increasing national focus on expanding Kenya’s energy mix to meet rising demand and attract both local and foreign investment.

Wanga added that the project not only represents a step toward energy security but also signals a broader commitment to modern infrastructure and innovation.

“Your Excellency, distinguished guests, this project is about more than just power. It is about unlocking our potential, improving lives, and shaping a better future for generations to come,” she asserted.

Government officials, including Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi and veteran politician Raila Odinga, have championed the project as a legacy for President William Ruto and a critical step towards industrialisation.

Speaking at a nuclear energy stakeholder engagement at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University on June 27, 2025, Raila said Kenya must embrace nuclear power to achieve long-term energy sustainability.

The forum was held under the theme ‘Partnering for a Sustainable Energy Future: Kenya’s Nuclear Power’.

“Diversifying our energy sources and maintaining a clean environment are critical to our development agenda as a nation. Part of the reason this country has not been able to generate and sustain well-paying jobs is the cost of energy,” Raila said
