Wamuchomba: Protesting youth prove Kenya is sitting on raw talent
By Aloys Michael, July 14, 2025Githunguri Member of Parliament (MP) Gathoni Wamuchomba has made a passionate call for renewed focus on youth empowerment through sports, expressing deep concern over the neglect of grassroots talent development in Kenya.
Her statements come at a time when youth discontent over unemployment and lack of opportunities has triggered nationwide demonstrations. Many young people have called for reforms and greater inclusion in national development programs.
She urged the government to push an agenda that resonates with a generation seeking hope and meaningful change, and may signal a broader shift in political discourse ahead of future elections.
In a statement on her X account on Monday, July 14, 2025, in response to recent youth-led protests, Wamuchomba highlighted the energy and potential of Kenya’s young people.
“I watched a lot of media clips of maandamano kimbikimbi (protests run). I have concluded that our young people are talented and very energetic,” she said.
Wamuchomba, who has often been outspoken on issues affecting youth, outlined her vision for a future where sports are given strategic national attention.
“When I am president, I will saturate every ward with government official sports academies, fully funded and ready to tap into the talents,” she declared. Instead of exporting labour, I will exploit Kenyan talents to the benefit of the players,” the statement read.

She criticised the mismanagement and diversion of sports funding, citing her constituency as an example.
“In Githunguri, we started a sports academy two years ago, but some powers ordered the reallocation of sports funds from the sports kitty to planting trees!” she lamented.
Wamuchomba questioned the priorities of current leadership, saying the lack of investment in youth programs contributes to rising frustration among the younger generation. “And then you ask why the youths are angry???” she posed rhetorically.
A strong advocate for grassroots development, Wamuchomba pledged to return control of sports funding to the local level.
“I will return sports money to the grassroots,” she affirmed.
Despite the challenges, Wamuchomba remained optimistic about the country’s future.
“Trust me, we can fix Kenya,” she asserted.
