The 11-member special committee probing impeachment charges against Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has acquitted the county chief of abuse of office allegations levelled against her by Kirinyaga MCAs.

The Senate Committee, chaired by Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala, said in its final report Friday that the MCAs did not substantiate charges against Waiguru.

The committee stated that the evidence produced by the ward reps did not link Waiguru to the offences they alleged she committed.

The report will be tabled on the Floor of the Senate Friday afternoon (June 26).

According to Senate Standing Order 175, the impeachment ends at the committee level if it determines that the charges levelled against an impeached governor do not merit.

On June 9, 23 out of the 33-member Kirinyaga County Assembly voted in favour of Governor Waiguru’s removal.

The impeachment motion against Waiguru was tabled in the Kirinyaga County Assembly on March 31, 2020 by MCA for Mutira Ward, David Kinyua Wangui.

Wangui accused Waiguru of, among other wrongdoings, abuse of office, gross misconduct and violation of the Constitution of Kenya.
